Presentation: Occupying the Olympics, the use of social media to subvert the course of justice.
On Friday 24th February, I presented a paper that was accepted at the 6th Annual Politics, Sport and Media Conference at Southampton Solent University. I presented the prelim ‘findings’ of a paper that reflects the thought piece that I wrote for the British Library and I aim to review and use as a wider, ongoing study in the coming months. The slides, mainly visuals prompts more than anything, are below: Occupying the Olympics: The Use of social media to subvert the course of justice. View more presentations from Jennifer Jones.
Podcast: A case study of a university’s ‘grassroots’ digital strategy #uwsltas
As well as being interviewed by Mark Carrigan on the distinctions on the use of social media in the university for learning and teaching, I was also asked to give my thoughts on what a digital strategy for university might look like. This also fits into the on-going discussions around UWS’s current learning and teaching strategy on the hashtag #uwsltas. You can listen to this podcast on Mark’s website here. (In terms of accessibility, I would like to transcribe the interview at a later date.)
Podcast: Training, teaching or empowering people with social media? #uwsltas
I was recently interviewed by Mark Carrigan on the distinctions on the use of social media in the university for learning and teaching for a research project he is conducting on behalf of the University of Warwick. This fits into the on-going discussions around UWS’s current learning and teaching strategy on the hashtag #uwsltas. You can listen to the podcast on Mark’s website here. Project: Stories and Streams, week 5. “The module is not what I expected.”
A couple of days ago, I reflected on the move towards a student -led curriculum on the alternative media and web production course that I am running at BCU. Since the change of class structure this year to a ‘stories and streams’ format, some of the common issues that I have faced has been questions relating to the expectations of what the module might look like – and importantly, what it might cover. I’ve skirted around the issues in a few of the previous posts, but I think today was a real break through in terms of how I take …
Project: Stories and Streams, week 4, handing over curriculum control to the students.
As there are only two weeks left of the first level of investigations for the online journalism, alternative media and web production students, we are now starting to prepare them for the directed study week (week 6) assignment, a tool used by the institution as a check point snap shot of the module, filing in the gaps and the student’s individuals outputs so far. Assignment Context. Initially we wanted to only have one assignment, 100% of the coursework, to be handed in at the end of the course in May -acting as an individual portfolio of work reflecting the student’s …
Project: Championing Social Media Practice through Student/Academic Partnerships at @UWSInteractive
I’m really pleased that I’ve been able to announced several opportunities through two different, but very connected projects that I am part of at the University of the West of Scotland. The first is the opportunity to recruit current UWS students as social media student champions to work alongside academics and support staff to deliver social media surgeries during the UWS Interactive Festival that I am curating in May. Details of this are available on the UWS Interactive website. The deadline is this friday (24th Feb) The second is part of a bigger project called #citizenrelay, that is part of …
Workshop: @UWSDigital Social Media Masterclass at Bournemouth University
Introduction On Thursday and Friday of last week (16th and 17th of February) David McGillivray and I were invited to Bournemouth University, School of Tourism to deliver a full day workshop around social media and higher education for their staff and students in the department. The day was split between a two hour workshop designed to demystify some of the risks and opportunities of social media in the university environment through a (short) presentation of some conceptual ideas about online identity and talking through some examples of projects and websites that we have recently used at UWSCreative. This was quite …
